Lo Entropy carries a furling genoa, yankee, mainsail, mizzen sail and spinnaker. She also has a spare set of sails for extreme storm conditions. She has a dagger board style retractable keel that draws only 5 feet, allowing her to go into coral shallows. When extended to 13 feet, it gives excellent performance to windward. This unique combination allows us to dry out on the tide while we explore coastal settlements, enjoy inaccessible sandbanks or pull in to exotic locations where normal keelboats cannot anchor.

LoEntropy strives to be carbon-neutral, with 750 watts of solar photovoltaic panels. We have a 200 horsepower Caterpillar engine that provides the power to manoeuvre close in to shore, and a 3-phase 34 kVa diesel generator.

Accommodation

There are six well-ventilated, wood-panelled double cabins for our passengers, all en-suite with fans and reading lights. Décor is simple but functional, with a strong Swahili flavour welcoming our guests to the islands of the Monsoon Empires. Additional quarters ensure the crew are always fresh and ready for action.

Creature comforts are more than ample, with running hot & cold showers and toilets in every cabin, a 200 litre a day water-maker, and 3000 litres of fresh water storage capacity.

The emphasis of our cuisine is on fresh, local ingredients, preferably caught the same day on board or bought in exotic markets or from passing fishermen. The galley has a six-burner gas stove, allowing the chef to provide delicious meals, as well as regular snacks and refreshments. There are three fridges and one deep-freeze to ensure a permanent supply of cold drinks (local beer and minerals are free) and ice for mixers and cocktails.

There is plenty of deck space, with covered areas under the solar panels and the canvas deck awning, as well as secluded sunbathing spots and communal sitting areas on the stern.

Internet and Telephony

With the Thuraya satellite connection there is a permanent international telephone connection with SMS and data transfer capabilities. The USB laptop connection gives a 60 kbps downlink speed and a 15 kbps uplink speed - fast enough to check weather sites and webmail on the move. For passengers, call and data transfer charges will apply at US $6 per megabyte.

When near ports and in coastal regions our W25 Eriscsson 3G to Wifi router allows us to use local cellphone companies in Kenya, Tanazania, Mozambique, Comoros and Madagascar - both for voice and data. Typically the costs are less than 10% of using the satphone for the same ends.
