Lo Entropy has two experienced skippers, Geoff Boerne and Arthur Heywood, who alternate between the north and south-bound legs. The other partners in Monsoon Safaris are Paul Honig and Nick Murgatroyd. Paul is responsible for internet marketing, operational management, communications and relief skippering duties; Nick is involved in route development, logistics and marketing. They are both on board Lo Entropy whenever possible.
Our crew is drawn from South Africa as well as the countries we visit along the East African coast. The crew speak a variety of languages, with English and Swahili as the main forms of communication, while individuals are fluent in French, Dutch, Portuguese, German and Afrikaans.
A medical doctor by training, Arthur has sailed the African coast since he was 12, crossing the Atlantic three times and doing seven trips up and down the East African coast during the past 10 years.
He has also sailed a Chinese junk in Ghana and trimarans in Cape Town. He will be the Southbound skipper of Lo Entropy, leaving Tanga, Tanzania, at the end of 2009.
Nick is an experienced traveller, a committed trader and a serial entrepreneur. He has spent many years around the coast of East Africa and its hinterland, developing an interest in the history of the gold trade and the links between the inland city states and their Indian Ocean counterparts. Nick likes to spend time in his kayak, recently returning from a 300 km journey up Lake Malawi. He will ensure that you take home the best hand-made crafts from the places you visit.
Paul first hitch hiked through the length of Africa in 1985. Once bitten by the travel bug he did several extensive trips along the East African coast, and worked in Tanga, Tanzania, for a year.
He has sailed since early childhood in Holland, and since 1998 has sailed almost annually along the Tanzanian and Mozambican coasts. As a internet entrepeneur and partner in Monsoon Safaris he sorts out the logistics and IT requirements of the company.
Sailor, marine surveyor and environmentalist, Geoff has sailed Lo Entropy since he built her in the UK and set sail in 1996. He has since logged many thousands of miles, crossing the Atlantic twice, moving cargo under sail around the Caribbean for three years, and chartering the boat off the Welsh coast.
Most recently, Geoff sailed Lo Entropy from the UK via the Suez Canal to the Monsoon Coast. His experience on all types of yachts includes regattas in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean, as well as the Whitbread Round the World Race, and many years of charter and pleasure sailing.
