Ilha de Mozambique is a magical starting point for the south-north journey that goes via Pemba to the magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago, one of the most unexplored and unspoilt stretches of coastline in the world. The area is rich in history and this leg covers the routes taken by ancient traders carrying gold from the hinterland.

The journey starts in the vibrant and bustling port city of Dar es Salaam. We sail over to Zanzibar for a visit to the world-famous Stone Town. With its winding streets and magnificent buildings, Stone Town bears witness to tshe rich cultural history of the Indian Ocean. The leg continues up the west coast of Zanzibar to the northernmost tip at Ras Nungwi before returning to Dar.

The Spice Islands

The Pearl Islands

The spice trade was an integral part of the trade between the East African coast and the rest of the world. This leg starts in Dar es Salaam and includes a short visit to Stone Town. We will then explore the Zanzibar archipelago, in particular the less well-known Pemba Island with its beautiful beaches and world-class dive spots. The journey ends at Tanga, a city with many attractions including 15th century ruins, a Jurassic limestone cave and hot springs.

The Quirimbas Archipelago contains some thirty islands stretching from Pemba to the Tanzanian border, a string of pearls surrounded by white beaches and incredible marine life. This leg includes a visit to historic Ibo Island, a key link in the story of the Indian Ocean.
